Avocado – good, bad or just plain ugly?

Tried avocado before? Don’t know really what to do with them? Why bother with them?
They are a powerhouse of nutrients in the slippery green flesh – that’s why.
High in good fats and nutrients (vitamins E, potassium, B-vitamins, vitamin K – and many more) plus good levels of fibre (which most people just don’t get enough of).

The good fats help you feel fuller for longer (so can be great to help with weight loss), plus can help manage cholesterol levels (in particular LDL and triglycerides).

There is also evidence that it can help manage blood glucose levels which is great if you are at risk of diabetes. Elevated blood pressure can also be helped due to it being a natural source of potassium.

Excellent levels of vitamins contained in each one can help protect body tissues including eyes (lutein content), help manage chronic inflammation (due to oleic acid content) and improve skin (vitamin E, C, potassium).

But what do you actually do with them??A few ideas (apart from making guacamole) – add to smoothies, mix smooshed (technical term 😊 ) avocado into pasta for a creamy touch, add it to hummus, chopped up in salads, or use it as a replacement for butter – goes great as a spread on toast with an egg or two. I personally like my avocado with a good dash of pepper and/or paprika 😊 .When you are getting the flesh out, use a spoon rather than just a knife – the highest nutrient density is actually the darkest areas just under the skin, so make sure you give it a really good scrape.

They might be a bit ugly, but they are just sooo good for you!
